Federal government guidance for the remediation of contaminated sites exists, but does not address many of the questions raised by a project on the scale of Giant Mine. Martin Gavin, Project Manager of the Giant Mine Remediation Project, and Stratos have authored this paper which briefly describes the existing federal contaminated sites management framework, and then demonstrates the progressive approach to planning during the life cycle of a major remediation project that is contiguous from inception through closeout. The focus is on the planning challenges involved in addressing procurement, legal and delivery issues, and the strategies developed to accommodate these.

Stratos believes that increased awareness is needed on how project management can reduce negative environmental and socio-economic impacts and enhance positive ones. Project Managers are hungry for ideas on how to make their projects more sustainable and specific steps are needed for systematically addressing sustainability considerations in your projects. Including sustainability considerations in project management increases the chances of project success. Stratos has developed a framework that enables project managers to systematically address sustainability considerations through the project life cycle.
2008 Integrating Sustainability into Business Processes - Case Studies of Leading Companies
"Integrating Sustainability" means that environmental, social and broader economic factors, as well as more traditional financial factors are incorporated into business decision-making, actions and performance. Companies are increasingly integrating sustainability into their key business processes for different reasons, whether to manage new risks, gain business opportunity, or extend their role in society. Stratos, with the support of Industry Canada, conducted a study with seven Canadian and international companies who are seeing the value in integrating sustainability more effectively into their businesses. 2007 Stratos Sustainability Integration Summary Report
How do leading companies integrate sustainability into their business processes, such as strategic planning, business development, project management, community relations and employee recruitment and orientation? Through in-depth interviews with international and Canadian companies, Stratos, with support from Industry Canada, explores how a sample of leading companies are integrating sustainability into their business processes. The results of this study demonstrate the range of processes and tools which can be used or adapted by other companies interested in further integration - at the corporate, divisional and operational levels.
