ESG Advice and Support for Sheritt International
SUMMARY:
Sherritt International Corporation is one of the world’s largest producers of nickel from lateritic sources with operations and investments in Canada and Cuba. For a number of years, it was also the operator of the Ambatovy nickel mine in Madagascar. Sherritt is the largest independent energy producer in Cuba, with extensive oil and power operations across the island. Stratos has been Sherritt’s sustainability advisor and consulting partner for a number of years, during which time we have worked closely with their team, the executive leadership, and the divisions to develop a sustainability framework and management system that aligns with international good practice.
OUR APPROACH:
Our work has included identifying material ESG issues to the company and its stakeholders, collaborating with the divisions to develop ESG policies and standards that can be applied across the diverse geographies and divisions, and establishing a series of five-year objectives and targets to focus the company’s sustainability efforts. We have also worked closely with the EHS&S team to improve ESG performance measurement and reporting, both internally to senior management and the board, as well as externally through the sustainability report. Stratos recently supported the development of a climate strategy that aligns with international good practice and has supported adoption of various initiatives with workshops and training.

As a result, Sherritt has a well-functioning ESG management system in place that aligns with a wide range of international standards and expectations including, for example, Towards Sustainable Mining, the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights, emerging responsible sourcing requirements and supports achievement of targeted UN Sustainable Development Goals. Sherritt’s Sustainability Report has won several awards and is recognized as an example of high quality ESG disclosure.
